A Simulation-Based Analysis of Scheduling Policies for Multimedia Server

چکیده
Multimedia-on-demand (MOD) has grown dramatically in popularity, especially in the domains of education, business, and entertainment. Therefore, the investigation of various alternatives to improve the performance of MOD servers has become a major research focus. The performance of these servers can be enhanced significantly by servicing multiple requests from a common set of resources. The exploited degrees of resource sharing depend greatly on how servers schedule the waiting requests. By scheduling the requests intelligently, a server can support more concurrent customers and can reduce their waiting times for service. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of existing scheduling policies and propose two new policies, called Quantized First Come First Serve (QFCFS) and Enhanced Minimum Idling Maximum Loss (IML ). We demonstrate the effectiveness of these policies through simulation and show that they suite different patterns of customer waiting

Architecture of an I / O Subsystem for Video ServersIgor
This paper proposes a disk array-based Multimedia Storage Server architecture and an allocation policy suitable for multimedia and other kinds of data. By means of simulation we will evaluate the architecture of a mixed system in which the traac is both mul-timedia and non-multimedia. As the results obtained will show, traditional scheduling policies combined with advanced queue management tech...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Composite Routing and Scheduling Policies for Dynamic Multimedia Environments
In this paper, we present and evaluate algorithms to address combined path and server selection (CPSS) problems in highly dynamic multimedia environments. Our goal is to ensure effective utilization of network and server resources while tolerating imprecision in system state information. Components within the framework implement the optimized scheduling policies as well as collect/update the ne...
متن کاملScheduling with Soft Deadlines for Input Queued Switches
We study the problem of deadline aware scheduling for input queued (IQ) switches. While most research on scheduler design for IQ switches has focused on maximizing throughput and optimizing switch performance for non-realtime traffic, packet deadlines are a key consideration in the context of real-time applications like multimedia streaming and video telephony. In this paper, we introduce the n...

New generation of wireless networks, LTE and WiMAX, supports many services which consume a lot of resources (such as VOIP, Video Conference, Digital Video, Multimedia streams and online Multi-player Games). Supporting multi-media services in wireless communication systems provide new resource allocation challenges. Because of high loads in downlink, efficient resource allocation is vital in dow...
متن کاملIntegrating Multimedia Applications in Hard Real-Time Systems
This paper focuses on the problem of providing efficient run-time support to multimedia applications in a real-time system, where two types of tasks can coexist simultaneously: multimedia soft real-time tasks and hard real-time tasks. Hard tasks are guaranteed based on worst case execution times and minimum interarrival times, whereas multimedia and soft tasks are served based on mean parameter...
